FAQ

(Frequently Asked Questions …or stuff that might come up)

Q:
How do I link to a post?

A: Linking to a post is easy. Just click on the headline of the post, which will take you to that post’s exclusive page. At the top of your browser, highlight and copy the url (which is the permanent link, or permalink, of that post) and paste the link for that page into whatever you’re writing.

Example of a link to a post:
http://www.thephillysportsjournal.com/2008/10/30/world-champions/

When linking to a general page and not an individual post or story, simply copy the url out of the top of your browser and paste it into what you’re writing.

Example of a link to a page:
http://www.thephillysportsjournal.com/eagles-nfl/

Or the link to the page you’re on right now:
http://www.thephillysportsjournal.com/technical/

Q:
I can’t see everything on The Philly Sports Journal, such as the news headlines and the scoreboards, and sometimes pictures don’t show up. What’s the problem?

A: You might need new glasses or contacts. However, in regard to news headlines, scoreboards and other features, it’s more likely you just don’t have some basic software downloaded on your computer. Here are links to a few quick downloads that will help you (don’t worry, they’re all free):

Java
Flash
Windows Media Player/Silverlight or Quicktime Player

(Other stuff that’s good but not necessary for this site: Shockwave and iTunes.)

If you already have these items, there might be an issue with your browser. (A browser, for those of you who really know nothing about computers, is a program that enables you to browse the web. The most popular are Internet Exporer and Mozilla Firefox, although plenty of people use Netscape, Opera and Safari.)

Whichever browser you’re using, make sure you’re using the latest version and that you have all the updates.

As for pictures not showing up or being blank inside the frame, I’ve heard of this happening occasionally with certain versions of Internet Explorer, particularly on shared servers. Sometimes the pictures don’t show up until you start clicking around the site.

Q: The Philly Sports Journal’s links don’t open, such as when I click on a news headline or a link in a post. How do I fix this?

A: This is due to settings on your pop-up blocker. You can either temporarily disable your pop-up blocker, or modify your blocker settings if your program allows you to.

Q:
The rss feed for The Philly Sports Journal doesn’t load, it just endlessly keeps trying to load after I click on the button. What do I do?

A: Internet Explorer sometimes has trouble loading The Journal’s rss feed (as well as feeds from other sites). It’s extremely annoying. There are a few things you can do though.

If you have an rss reader program or something similar, as the feed attempts to load you can highlight the url (the web address in your browser window that begins http://), copy it (Ctrl-C) and paste it (Ctrl-V) into your reader.

Or, just copy and paste this: http://thephillysportsjournal.com/feed

Another simple suggestion is to view The Philly Sports Journal and other sites with Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Firefox and IE each have their pros and cons, and some elements of The Journal don’t look as good in Firefox, but Firefox usually has fewer buggy issues — particularly when it comes to rss feeds. (If you decide you don’t like Firefox, just use it once to set up the rss feed.)

Q:
When I scroll through headlines (on the News page or certain other pages) or select a news source from the menu, it shows an error with the feed. What the hell?

A: If refreshing the page doesn’t fix it, close out of your browser and then reopen it and come back to The Journal. That almost always works. (Your browser probably caught a little hiccup or got bogged down somewhere along your travels.)

If closing out and reopening your browser doesn’t work, the issue might be a kink or update with the feed source itself, not an issue with your browser. This happens every now and then. Wait a little while and then try scrolling to that source again.

If you still have the same problem, e-mail me and I’ll check it out.

Q:
The Philly Sports Journal’s looks weird, with odd characters and with page objects shifted slightly out of place (or drastically out of place) or shooting off in various directions. What’s going on?

A: This is uncommon. The appearance of The Journal has been tested in multiple browsers and multiple screen sizes. But, occasionally, this issue has come up. It usually happens to people when they’re using computers at work or on some type of shared server. However, the first thing you should do is check to make sure the zoom on your browser is at at 100 percent or slightly above (usually up to around 125 percent).

I am always tweaking some technical things, so if that doesn’t do the trick, please e-mail me a brief description of your problem and include the following info:

1. What size screen you’re using (normal, big, widescreen…)
2. Which browser you’re using (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox…)
3. Are you at work, another public place, or at home?
4. Your internet provider
5. What kind of computer you’re using (the brand name, new laptop, 14-year-old desktop…)
6. Which operating system you have (Windows XP Sevice Pack 2, Windows Vista, Mac OS X…)

I like to know about any technical issues so I can remedy and prevent them as much as possible. I’ll try to respond to your e-mail within a day or two. In the meantime, make sure your browser is updated or try viewing The Philly Sports Journal on a different browser.
